Military History

Extract From Military Sources

The following extract gives more detail: "Tragedy At Sea Breeze"

This phrase refers to a tragic WW2 event on 17 April 1942, when, at 02:12, a German bomber dropped three bombs on the Brighstone Holiday Camp on the Isle of Wight. The Camp was being used for military training and housing during WW2, and the Hotel Sea Breeze was used as an Officer's Mess.

The three bombs destroyed the "Sea Breeze" hotel as well as damaging the adjacent, wooden "November Cottage".

The nine members of the 183 Field Regiment killed included:

Officers: T/Captain William Alfred Ronald Sandover, Lt. Crichton Alexander Ward-Davies, Second Lt. Harold Kenneth Lonsdale, and Second Lt. Thomas Whiteside.

Other Ranks: Lance Bombardier Thomas T. McComish, Gunner William Eric Booton, Gunner Frederick Moysey Brookhouse, Gunner William George Garlinge, and Gunner Robert John Curry.

Burials: T/Capt. Sandover
and Lt. Ward-Davies
were buried with full military honours at Parkhurst Military Cemetery on 21 April 1942, while others were returned to their homes.

Injuries: Three men were injured: Captain K.J. Robinson, Lt. J.R. Metcalfe, and Gunner D. Frisby.
